Carelli was a "watercolourist of great repute. His life was adventurous. He studied unter Leith, the Englishman, in Naples, then went to Rome; later, in Paris, he took commissions from the court and painted for the Versailles Gallery and the Palais Royal [...] For Napoleon III he designed an album of one hundred drawings, and Tsar Alexander III bought several of his works" (cf. Thieme/Becker V, 591).
