First edition of this early standard work on the Papal coins of the first Christian Milennium. Reprinted twice, in 1978 and again in 2000, as a fac-simile. The numismatist and librarian Domenico Promis (1804-74) is considered the "Nestor of 19th century Italian numismatics: "Fondamentale per il suo tempo e per il periodo considerato e' anche la sua memoria 'Monete dei romani pontefici avanti il Mille', del 1858" (Ferdinando Bassoli, Monete e medaglie nel libro antico, 75f.).
